Aldi, Tesco Sainsbury's, Pret and M&S pull chicken sandwiches and food from sale over salmonella fears

SUPERMARKETS including Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury's have pulled chicken sandwiches and other products from the shelves due to salmonella fears.

The chains, also including Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Pret a Manger,have scrapped a range of ready-to-eat foods including sandwiches, wraps and salads over food poisoning risks.

Sainsbury's has pulled more than 30 chicken products from stores, as they may contain salmonella.

The supermarket said the recall, which includes a chicken and bacon sub roll and BBQ wings, is a "precautionary measure".

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “We are asking customers not to consume the product and to return it to their nearest Sainsbury’s store, where they will receive a full refund.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Tesco confirmed in a tweet that shoppers should avoid at least 14 chicken products, including piri piri mini fillets and chicken breast slices.

M&S has also urged customers to return products containing cooked chicken, listing 12 items that shoppers can get a full refund for.

Waitrose shoppers have been told not to eat 10 chicken products.

Meanwhile, the Food Standards Agency has issued an urgent recall notice for two Aldi products.

That includes the Eat + Go chicken and bacon Caesar wrap, and the triple version.

Shoppers have been warned not to eat the products and can return them to the store for a full refund.

Salmonella causes diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and a fever, and can lead to hospitalisation in severe cases.

One said: 'Tried to buy cooked chicken at @sainsburys tonight and it's been blocked at the till from being sold – anyone else found issues? 

'Apparently all cooked chicken is blocked from sale including chicken sandwiches.'

Another wrote: 'I saw two staff members removing loads of chicken products from the shelves this evening, they were being 'destroyed' – working from a big list. 

'I managed to buy some but they checked the list first!'

The products affected appear to have use by dates of between May 3 and May 20.

You can find a full list of products that have been recalled below but contact your supermarket if you're not sure.

Meanwhile, Pret said a potential food safety risk at one of its suppliers means it has pulled chicken items from the menu.

The sandwich chain has removed the ad for its new Sriracha Chicken Salad Wrap from its website.

Other customer favourites such as the Chicken Caesar baguette also don't appear online, with a note instead saying: "Oops, this product is currently not in our shops."

A Pret A Manger spokesperson said: "As a precautionary measure, we’ve temporarily removed the majority of chicken items on our menu due to a potential food safety risk at one of our suppliers.

"We hope to have these products back in shops soon. We apologise for any inconvenience."

The affected meat has come from a Cranswick factory in Hull, the producer confirmed in a statement.

It has closed the site for investigations after salmonella was found in a routine inspection.

Cranswick said: "As a precautionary measure, we have asked our customers to remove any of their products containing our ready to eat chicken produced during the affected period.

"We are working closely with the Foods Standards Agency and will collaborate with their experts to resolve the matter."

It's not yet clear whether anyone has been ill after eating the contaminated food.
