Asda crowned Britain’s cheapest supermarket for Christmas shopping basket

Asda has won the Britain’s supermarket battle for the cheapest Christmas shopping basket.

According to a new report by The Grocer, it found that the supermarket secured the title for an impressive seventh year in a row.

Asda’s basket of 33 festive goods cost £6.44 less than its closest rival Morrisons, the trade magazine discovered.

The Grocer’s festive basket includes a turkey crown, pigs in blankets, Brussels sprouts, Christmas pudding plus plenty of alcohol and party food.

It also found that Asda’s total of £91.22 was £6.44 cheaper than runner-up Morrisons, which is £97.66.

Asda offered the lowest price for 19 items, including the all-important Christmas centrepiece, a turkey.

The magazine said that Morrisons offered the cheapest price for 15 lines, beating its rivals on their pork chipolatas, profiteroles, red cabbage and breadsticks.

Third place went to Tesco on £97.93, which was £6.71 more expensive than Asda.

But Sainsbury’s was a whopping £13.54 more expensive than Asda at £104.76.

Meanwhile, Waitrose wasn’t exactly cheap with a shop costing £122.24, a staggering £31.01 more expensive than the winners Asda.

In other shopping news, Asda launched its Christmas Dinner Pizza which is tree-shaped and topped with pigs in blankets.

Following the success of 2018’s pizza, the supermarket unveiled its festive feast which is topped with an entire roast dinner.

The Christmas Dinner Pizza costs £3.50 and in available both online and in store now.

An Asda spokesperson said: "We know our customers love our seasonal pizzas, but this time we’ve completely embraced the festive spirit by shaping the tree as everyone’s favourite Christmas decoration.

"When pulling together food for a party you can’t go wrong with offering pizza, and with the added festive twist your guests will be delighted with the food."
