Boy, 6, ‘thrown’ from 10th floor of Tate Modern is a French National

The six-year-old boy who was thrown from a 10th floor viewing platform at Tate Modern was a French national visiting London with his family, police have confirmed.

The youngster is now in a critical but stable condition in hospital after the plunge.

Witnesses described harrowing scenes as a woman screamed "he's my son" after the boy landed on a fifth floor roof at the London landmark on Sunday afternoon.

A 17-year-old boy remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The teen is not thought to be known to the boy, according to Scotland Yard. His family are being supported.

"They are French nationals visiting London," said a police spokesman in an updated statement.

But police are also appealing for witnesses who saw a male whose "behaviour seemed out of place, suspicious or worrying" to come forward .

The boy fell at around 2.40pm on Sunday in an incident being treated as an "isolated event with no distinct or apparent motive".

Visitors were prevented from entering or leaving the gallery while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Detective Constable Inspector John Massey, from Met Police, said: "My team is also very keen to talk to you if you witnessed a male whose behaviour seemed out of place, suspicious or worrying in the hour or two before the incident in or near the gallery.

"It may be that this is something which has only just come back to you. If so, please still make that call to the investigation team."

A distraught mum who is said to have screamed "where's my son" and "he's my son" at the art gallery – Britain's busiest tourist attraction – was supported at the scene.

Nancy Barnfield, 47 and of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, said she heard a "loud bang" during her visit with her family.
