Get a fresh look in your home without the price tag with these Sun Savers tips

WE are going mad for home improvements – but tradesmen can be hard to come by.

One in five of us are planning to get work done over the next year, a survey by Direct Line reports, but with workmen overwhelmed prices are rising. If you want a fresh new look without a huge price tag, it here are some tips . . .

MIRROR, MIRROR: If your room is a bit small and you don’t want to fully repaint, a mirror on either side of the wall makes it seem bigger. This works great in lounge areas or bedrooms and also makes the room appear brighter. Dunelm has great basic mirrors perfect for making sure light bounces around the room. I like the Essentials 55cm square one, £6.40, down from £8.

FLOOR SAVER: If you can’t afford to replace flooring, opt for a large, neutral rug then lay a smaller, more colourful one on top for a designer effect. La Redoute has amazing designs and they currently have up to 40 per cent off some styles.

LIGHT RELIEF: Changing light switches and plug-socket covers from plain plastic to ones with a metal finish can upgrade a room’s look. I like those at sparkswarehouse.com for £3.89, usually £12.58, and there’s matching dual plug socket covers for £5.09, down from £20.86.

BLINDING EFFECT: New curtains or blinds can transform a room. Check out blinds direct.co.uk. I’m a big fan of their faux wooden Venetian blinds. They currently have up to 70 per cent off on various options and there’s up to 6.7 per cent cashback if buying via Topcashback.co.uk. You can also order free samples to check the style,

FAKE FITTED: Fitted wardrobes make a bedroom look extra-luxe but you can fake the look by getting a flatpack wardrobe big enough for an entire wall. After putting it together, but before screwing on the doors, fix it to the wall. It will look just like a real fitted unit at a fraction of the cost. I rate the Kleppstad wardrobes at Ikea for £75 — cheaper than similar at Argos for £95.
