Welsh hairdresser playing Princess Diana in a new musical says it’s a ‘positive tribute’ to the late royal – and hopes Prince William and Prince Harry will ‘love it’ too

A hairdresser who is set to play Diana, Princess of Wales, in a stage musical about the royal’s life, has claimed fans will see it as a ‘positive tribute’.

Natasha John, who previously worked in her mother’s hair salon in Pencoed, Mid Glamorgan, admitted that when she first got the call about Call Me Diana, she thought the idea ‘was a little strange’.

The amateur singer was asked to audition for the role after appearing in the ‘unexpected star’ slot on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show on BBC1.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine this morning, Natasha said: ‘Well, when they first called me and said, “Diana the musical”, even I thought, “This is a bit strange”.

‘But when I heard the music and then I read the script, I thought, “This is actually a lovely tribute.” The lyrics they’ve used are words that she actually said. It’s her story, it’s a tribute.

‘If you love Diana, you will love this show, I promise. The music is amazing, [and] the costumes.’

And not only does Natasha hope royal enthusiasts love the show, but she’s also holding out hope that Diana’s sons Prince William and Prince Harry will find it a fitting tribute.

‘Our aim was to do a show that hopefully the boys (Prince William and Prince Harry) will love.’

The production will be showcased at the Leicester Square Theatre, in London’s West End tomorrow, in a bid to raise funds needed to stage an ongoing production.

Composer David Smart and Lyricist Brian Watson, who say the British production is a ‘tribute fit for a princess’, first created the script 12 years ago.

But ‘at the time they thought it was too soon to do but they’re hoping now is the time’, according to Natasha.

Call Me Diana covers the royal’s life from the moment she got engaged to Prince Charles in 1981, to her death in 1997.

‘She was an icon, and it does go into the troubles she had and her heartbreak,’ Natasha admitted. ‘But the story is a tribute, a positive tribute.’

‘I’m a little bit scared to be honest,’ she confessed on the programme. ‘I keep telling myself it’s going be fine and I can do this.

‘It is a gamble and it is a risky role, but I’m a hairdresser form wales so it’s the type of thing I have to do. Hopefully it can help my career.’
