How to create a vegetarian Big Mac at home: Food influencer shares easy five-step recipe using M&S beef-free patties

With McDonald’s slowly reopening its stores amid the coronavirus pandemic, many will be able to get their hands on a Big Mac after months of going without.

But for those who don’t eat meat, a Big Mac has long seemed out of reach, until now.

British food influencer @naomigenes has created a vegetarian version of the popular fast food dish using M&S Plant Kitchen No Beef Burgers and its Special Burger Sauce, which is a copycat of the famous McDonald’s topping.

In the simple five-step recipe, she grills the burger (using no oil) and adds onion and lettuce for true authenticity. 

She serves it in a brioche bun with sliced cheese and even puts skinny fries on the side. 

The British mother-of-one, who boasts more than 700,000 followers, said she couldn’t tell the difference between the burger and real meat.  

Many followers replied to Naomi saying it was the tastiest burger they’ve ever tried. 

One went so far as to say it was even better than the meat version, while others swapped out the regular fries for sweet potato.

How to make a vegetarian Big Mac

INGREDIENTS (MAKES TWO)

  • M&S Plant Kitchen No Beef Burgers
  • Two brioche buns 
  • One onion 
  • American cheese slices, or vegan alternative
  • M&S Special Burger Sauce
  • French fries

METHOD

1. Place the No Beef Burgers on a medium heat for 18 minutes turning them occasionally.

2. While the burgers are cooking, lightly toast the brioche buns for five seconds each side in the same pan and shred the lettuce ready for topping (then put to one side).

3. Add the onions to the pan for a few minutes (then put to one side).

4. Add a slice of cheese to each burger, making sure to flip them so the cheese melts.

5. Finally lay the buns out, top one with the onions, burger with melted cheese and lettuce, and the other with a generous dollop of the Special Burger Sauce.

  • Serve with French Fries for the ultimate treat

Many who tried out Naomi’s recipe shared their efforts on Instagram, with delicious-looking results. 

Yesterday McDonald’s announced nearly 1,000 more restaurants will reopen for drive-thrus or deliveries from next week, with a £25 cap on orders.

Each franchise has been asked to make sure its staff are fit and able to work, following nearly two months of lockdown measures.

From next Tuesday McDonald’s will begin announcing the restaurants that have reopened. By Thursday, 975 franchises will be operating. 

Footage shows how restaurants are reopening with protective screens between staff and customers. Workers are also expected to wash their hands every 30 minutes.

Protective screens have been put in place inside the kitchens and at drive-thrus to lower the risk of contamination.

For customers, the major changes are a reduced menu and a £25 spending cap, which has been introduced as staff get used to working in smaller teams and to reduce waiting times at drive-thru lanes. Diners are also being asked to pay via contactless cards.

A McDonald’s spokesman said: ‘We can today announce that by June 4, 1,019 of our restaurants will have reopened, either for Drive Thru or McDelivery.

‘This means every Drive Thru in the UK and Ireland will reopen between Tuesday and Thursday next week and we will start to expand the availability of McDelivery too.’
