What is Martin Luther King Jr Day?
MLK Day is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King was the leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
The holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year.
King’s birthday is January 15 so the earliest Monday for MLK Day is January 15 and the latest is January 21.
President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983 and the date was first observed in 1986.
Some states initially resisted observing the holiday and gave it alternative names or combined it with other holidays.
It was officially observed in all 50 American states for the first time in 2000.
Only two other figures have national holidays in the US honouring them: George Washington and Christopher Columbus.
