Mum shares genius trick to bag £20 worth of Morrisons shopping for just £3.09

A woman shared her money-saving trick which involves bagging £20 worth of Morrisons shopping for less than a fiver.

Amy Barnett, 26, said she took home the supermarket’s “magic box” which contained varieties of goods like fruit and vegetables, cupcakes and bread rolls.

The mum used the Too Good To Go app which aims to cut down waste by connecting shoppers with the chance to “rescue” food that will otherwise be thrown away.

She was able to purchase the treats for little more than £3 this week.

The support worker, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, said: “The boxes are just £3.09 per box – it’s the equivalent of a children’s lucky bag but with food! They’re fun and they’re saving food going to waste.

"I decided to buy the box to save wasted food, to share with others and to spread the word, and because I like the unknown!"

Amy also said how the app has let her family try new foods, adding: “The box had a variety of cakes, a celebration cake, lots of different fruits and vegetables, including some I hadn’t tried before, so it was nice to try something new.

"There was so much fruit in it which my little girl loves too and it was all fresh. My little girl and I host coffee mornings at our house each month for charity and we have one this weekend so the cakes in this particular box have a good enough date for the coffee morning.

"Some things needed using ASAP so be prepared to make a quick soup or something like that. Other items I gifted as I didn’t want to throw them away, as that defeats the object of what the boxes are for.

"I am also going to look into gifting some items to a food bank or homeless shelter but I need to check their policies on some foods being over their best before date."

But you should know that the boxes sell out quickly so Amy has urged others to act fast.

She continued: “They are really difficult to get the boxes, you have to be on the app at the right time – they sell out in seconds! They sell out in a minute so you need to be on at 6.10pm refreshing like mad.

"I feel the boxes were worth at least £10 and to be honest at full price probably £20 but obviously they had a short life on them.

"I felt really good not just because of the money-saving but because I’d tried new foods and stopped food going to waste."

The Too Good To Go app also works with some restaurants, according to LatestDeals.co.uk.
