My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s but still insists nothing is wrong

DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, my husband is in denial. He insists there is nothing wrong.

Worse than the memory problems are the moods he gets into because he thinks he has been slighted in some way.

I am constantly walking on eggshells. I just try to agree but that isn’t easy.

I am 69 and he is 71. He has a telephone appointment with the memory clinic soon, when I hope he will speak to the nurse.

But when he has a hospital appointment, he claims afterwards nothing is wrong with his memory.

Would it be cruel of me when he goes into one of his sulks to tell my husband I wish he didn’t have Alzheimer’s and I pray a cure can soon be found?

DEIDRE SAYS: I get your frustration but it is his condition talking, not really him. Stay calm when he is confused and moody but note any changes in his memory and behaviour so you can tell the memory clinic.

Say how worried you are and be honest when it makes your life harder – you are in this too, after all.
