Oprah Winfrey is defending Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s request for privacy, saying it doesn’t mean the couple have to stay silent.

The TV maven, 67, appeared on the “Today” show Friday and spoke to Hoda Kotb about the backlash that Harry, 36, and Meghan, 39, have received in recent months for discussing personal issues on TV shows and podcasts after quitting the British royal family last year to lead quieter lives in the US.

“Privacy doesn’t mean silence,” Winfrey said while promoting her new AppleTV+ documentary series with the Duke of Sussex, “The Me You Can’t See.”

“You know, I ask for privacy, and I’m talking all the time,” she continued. “So, I think being able to have a life that you are not intruded upon by photographers or people flying overhead or invading your life is what every person wants and deserves — to not to be intruded and invaded upon. That’s what people are missing.”

Harry and Meghan have said that they moved to California to get away from the critical UK press and to ensure the safety of their growing family. However, some royal watchers have been critical about the pair continuing to grant interviews and take on projects that only draw more attention to them.

The Sussexes’ most explosive venture yet was their March sit-down interview with Winfrey, which the host said they “have not shared any regrets” about.

“I understood what had happened to them, and I wanted the rest of the world to come away being able to answer the question, ‘Why did they leave?’” she explained on Friday. “And I think by the time that interview was done, people understood.”

During the CBS interview, Harry and Meghan discussed their decision to exit their roles as senior royals after there was allegedly a discussion about the color of their son Archie’s skin. The “Suits” alum, who is pregnant with a baby girl, also said that she was suicidal during her time in the spotlight and repeatedly asked the palace for help to no avail.

Harry went into detail in his AppleTV+ show about how Meghan — with whom he just celebrated his three-year wedding anniversary — told him that she was suicidal.

“The scariest thing for her was her clarity of thought. She hadn’t lost it — she wasn’t crazy or self-medicating, be it through pills or alcohol, she was absolutely sober,” he said. “She was completely sane, yet in the quiet of night, these thoughts woke her up.

“The thing that stopped her from seeing it through was how unfair it would be on me after everything that had happened to my mum and to now be put in the position of losing another woman in my life with a baby inside her, our baby.”

Harry also compared his relationship with Meghan to the romance his late mother, Princess Diana, had with Dodi Fayed.

“My mother was chased to her death while she was in a relationship with someone that wasn’t white, and now look what’s happened,” he said in the show. “You want to talk about history repeating itself. They’re not going to stop until [Meghan] dies.”
