Piers Morgan has slammed CBS as the “Cowardly Broadcasting System” in the wake of pal Sharon Osbourne’s departure from “The Talk” amid a race controversy last week.
In a scathing column published Monday for the Daily Mail, Morgan referenced Osbourne’s now-former colleague Sheryl Underwood, who appeared to defend George Lopez following his foul-mouth rant in 2017.
“It’s an absolute disgrace and given how Underwood defended HER friend George Lopez when he DID say racist things that were caught on camera, it’s disgustingly hypocritical of her,” Morgan said in his column.
“As is the behavior of CBS, the Cowardly Broadcasting System, who’ve so pathetically bowed to the woke mob illiberally baying for blood like a bunch of crazed language-policing fascists,” he continued.
At the time, Lopez called a black woman a “b—h” over her reaction to a controversial joke in his set, where he spoke about rules in a Latino family: “Don’t marry somebody black and don’t park in front of our houses.”
On Friday, CBS confirmed Osbourne’s exit from “The Talk,” noting the events that took place during a March 10 episode, in which Osbourne got into an emotional debate with her co-hosts while defending Morgan.
Earlier this month, Morgan quit his post at “Good Morning Britain” over remarks he made about Meghan Markle following her bombshell sit-down with Oprah Winfrey.
“I feel like I’m about to be put in an electric chair because I have a friend who many people think is a racist, so that makes me a racist,” Osbourne said, asking her co-hosts to tell her “what he’s uttered that’s racist.”
In a statement released by CBS, the network stated: “The events of the March 10 broadcast were upsetting to everyone involved, including the audience watching at home. As part of our review, we concluded that Sharon’s behavior toward her co-hosts during the March 10 episode did not align with our values for a respectful workplace.”
Morgan later added in his column Monday, “So, it’s OK for Sheryl Underwood to passionately defend someone who spews racist abuse at a black woman, but it’s not OK for Sharon Osbourne to passionately defend someone who didn’t?
“This is such an outrageous double standard,” he continued.
On Monday, Page Six exclusively reported that Osbourne, 68, got a payout of up to eight figures from CBS as she departed the daytime series.
“Sharon is walking away with a $5 to $10 million minimum payout and was able to spin that it was her decision [to leave the show],” a source told us.
Morgan had previously defended Osbourne over the weekend in a separate column for the Mail on Sunday.
A rep for Underwood did not immediately return our request for comment.
