Prince Harry Married Meghan Markle Because She Helped Him Break Away From Being Prince William's 'Perpetual Backup,' Royal Expert Says

Many royal followers are curious about Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. There have been a lot of speculations about why the couple got together in the first place and how they have changed each other. According to a royal expert, one big reason why Harry married Meghan could have been because she helped him break away from being Prince William’s “perpetual backup.”

Meghan Markle reportedly showed Prince Harry a life outside of being Prince William’s ‘perpetual backup’

Because of their birth orders, Harry and William grew up with different roles in life. William was groomed from a young age to be a royal heir. Meanwhile, Harry was often treated as a “spare.”

For example, author Robert Lacey said in his book Battle of Brothers that Harry and William’s relationship became more strained as they got older because of these role differences.

Additionally, Lacey alleged that Meghan helped Harry to break free of these expectations placed upon him. He said, as reported by Yahoo, “I mean, clearly the royal plan and expectation was that Harry would marry a nice, interesting girl called Henrietta or Annabel and go and live in the country and be happy with the role of spare, just as he had been very loyally during the early years of the marriage of William and Kate.”

Lacey added, “[Meghan] offered a more challenging and inspiring and creative destiny than being his brother’s perpetual backup.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gradually broke away from the royal family

After Meghan and Harry got married, they initially joined forces with William and his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. The four royals were often called the “Fab Four” by fans and the media. However, gradually, Meghan and Harry began separating themselves from the Cambridges.

Meghan and Harry moved out of Kensington Palace, where they originally lived with William and Kate. They set up home outside of London while also creating their own charity organization and press office. This was thought of as highly unusual since royal “spares” often did not have such autonomy in the royal family.

Additionally, in early 2020, Meghan and Harry announced their plan to step down as senior royals. They moved to Southern California in March, and have been working on their own philanthropic projects. The couple even signed a deal with Netflix to produce content for the streaming giant.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reportedly have tension with the Cambridges

There have been much speculations about the relationship between the Sussexes and the Cambridges amid these developments. Some sources believe there continues to be tension between the two couples.

For example, royal expert Ingrid Seward thinks the “Fab Four” has a “broken relationship” that would be difficult to mend.

“I rather doubt that they will ever get back to how they used to be. I really don’t think so,” Seward said on the podcast Pod Save the Queen. “I think that’s probably a broken relationship. I think perhaps if something happened to Catherine or Meghan, the boys would be together again. But as long as their ladies are there and their families are there…if there was an awful tragedy it would bring them together, but otherwise I don’t think that relationship will be mended.”

However, other people shared that Harry and William have allegedly been talking more often after Harry moved to the U.S.

The Daily Mail reported in September that, according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, the distance has been a “good thing” for Harry and William. Nicholl said that the brothers “are speaking more than they did before,” but it could still be a while before they can share a “cozy Christmas together.”
