Prisoner burns to death in cell after starting fire and barricading door shut

A prisoner burned to death in his cell after deliberately starting a fire and barricading the door shut.

Christian Hinkley, 33, died on July 29 after suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Paramedics, police and fire crews were called to HM Prison Swaleside – a category B men's prison on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent – where they found the inmate.

He had created a barrier within his cell which prevented prison staff from accessing him quickly. He had no previous history of self harm.

Hinkley was serving a sentence for grievous bodily harm with intent as well as three common assaults on the same woman.

Two years previously he had asked to stay in jail because on the outside "there was no structure in place for him".
