Sandi Tokvig’s Great British Bake Off replacement has been announced

It’s just been announced that Matt Lucas will replace Sandi Toksvig on The Great British Bake Off, and we have mixed feelings about it.

In sad Great British Bake Off news, presenter Sandi Toksvig has decided to step away from her role on the show. After three years of working alongside co-host Noel Fielding, Toksvig made the announcement that she is leaving earlier this year. Fans can currently catch her in the Stand Up To Cancer charity series, but it will be her last appearance on the beloved baking show.

She said in a statement: “When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family.Unusually I am departing from The Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work.”

Toksvig went on to praise the “wonderful” programme and described working with her colleagues as “one of the greatest pleasures” of her life.

Now, Toksvig’s replacement has been revealed: Matt Lucas will be joining Fielding for presenting duties. While it will still be hard to wave goodbye to Toksvig, we think Lucas will be a welcome (and hilarious!) addition to the tent.

In a video shared on the GBBO Twitter account, Lucas talked about being told off by his mum for eating cakes while growing up, and he did a run through of how he’d deliver tasks to contestants.

As you can imagine, there are lots of excited fans right now.

One delighted fan wrote: “Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding is a duo I didn’t know I needed until now #GBBO.”

Another pointed out the relevance of Lucas’ Little Britain character Marjorie, tweeting: “Yes! Please dress as Marjorie at least once!”

And a third made an important case, writing: “Sandi is a hard act to follow but @RealMattLucas will be brilliant looking forward to it!!”

Fielding responded to the news of Sandi’s departure with an emotional tweet, which read: “I feel like Tom without Jerry! Mick without a Keef 🙁 Gonna miss yooooooooooooooooo and the wonderful times we got to play together in the tent! Double acts are [a] rare and magical beast and working with you was a pleasure x x x All my love Mr Noel x”

No, you’re crying.

Prue Leith has also spoken out about Sandi’s departure, writing: “I have absolutely loved working with Sandi, she’s been a brilliant host and enormous fun and I am in awe of how hard she works juggling so many different projects. We shall be lifelong friends’ way beyond the tent.”

OK, maybe we’re crying too at this point.
