Tesco shopper reveals how to read a secret code that shows customers when special offers on their favourite foods will expire
- Ricky and Naomi Willis, who run Skint Chef blog, discovered the supermarket tip
- Pair noticed yellow labels contain a six digit code which appears to be a date
- Number matches date specified on Tesco website for the end of the promotion
Eagle-eyed shoppers have revealed how Tesco customers can spot when the offers on their favourite foods are set to expire.
Ricky and Naomi Willis from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who run the Skint Chef and Skint Dad blogs, posted the tip online after they discovered it while traversing their local supermarket.
The pair noticed that the yellow labels, which show discounted prices and offers, have a secret code at the bottom which apparently reveals the date the deal ends.
It appears a six digit number is actually a backwards date, and Tesco confirmed this number relates to the promotion.

The first two digits of the code are the year, the next pair are the month, and the fifth and sixth numbers show the day.
A bottle of Heinz Classic Barbecue sauce, for example, displays the code 190806.
This translates to August 6, 2019 – which is the same date advertised online for the end of the offer, which discounts the product from £2.50 to £2.

Another label at the supermarket revealed that a three for £2 offer on ‘selected Tesco slices’ will remain in place until 200228, or February 28, 2020.
A spokesperson for Tesco confirmed that the codes at the bottom of the yellow label do relate to the promotion, but said the dates are ‘aimed at store colleagues and can change’.
And Tesco is not the only supermarket to use this tactic, with the secret codes also appearing on labels in Asda and Home Bargains.

Writing on the blog, Naomi said: ‘When I’m in the supermarket, I check prices like a hawk.
‘And something is glaring on the price label on the Tesco shelf that will seem obvious when you see it.
‘You can use this to determine if you need to buy your favourite groceries sharpish and potentially bulk, or if you’ve got more time to buy the food over a longer time, saving you potentially wasting food.’
