Eurostar trains could soon take Brits direct to Italy, Spain and Portugal – The Sun

EUROSTAR have just launched a new direct route to Amsterdam, with fares from London starting from just £35.

For Brits who love rail travel, there are even more good news – the company are thinking about launching high-speed services to Rome, Barcelona and Lisbon.

Countries including Switzerland and Germany are also on the card, and journeys could extend as far as Eastern Europe.

Eurostar already operates regular scheduled services to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam direct from London St Pancras.

Passengers can also travel to Rotterdam, Lyon, Marseille or Avignon with the rail firm, and there are a number of seasonal ski services as well.

But now even more destinations could be within range thanks in part to a merger with high-speed rail firm Thalys that's set to be completed by 2021.

UK's Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told the Daily Mail that ministers are "fully committed" to helping the rail firm launch a number of "seamless" services from London to different destinations in Europe as part of what's known as Project Green Speed.

He said: "Among those destinations mentioned to be added in the future is Bordeaux…Spain, Portugal, Geneva and beyond into the rest Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Frankfurt.

"Ultimately, we want to see seamless connections, with continental high-speed networks to destinations lighting up across the departure board."

It's not clear when the new routes might launch, but the extra competition could mean cheaper flights from low cost airlines.

There's a European program that gives Brits free rail travel in Europe.

Brits heading to Europe in 2020 should be aware of the latest travel advice after Brexit.

There are also different rules if you're travelling after 2021.
