Super Nintendo World Finally Receives an Opening Date

Originally scheduled to open its doors during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Universal Studios Japan had unfortunately been forced to delay the launch of its Super Nintendo World due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but now, the company has finally announced a concrete opening date: February 4, 2021.

Based on some of Nintendo‘s most beloved titles, Super Nintendo World builds a physical world around fan-favorite characters such as Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Princess Peach. It features a variety of different rides and walk-through activities, with one of the first main attractions being a Mario Kart experience inside Bowser’s Castle. Much like the Mario games themselves, visitors will be able to collect virtual coins around the park via a special wristband or interact with special park features using a Nintendo Switch.

Despite the optimistic outlook of the new opening date for the theme park, Japan’s theme-park industry is still struggling from plummeting revenues. Universal Studios Japan itself is only operating at half capacity in order to curb the spread of the COVID-19, while the Osaka park’s owner NBCUniversal has decided to suspend plans to open another Nintendo-themed area over in Orlando.

In other travel-related news, Airbnb has finally filed to go public following a profitable third quarter.
