You can apply to become godparent to TUI’s new ships – and get free travel perks

TUI is looking for two godparents for its new river cruise ships.

Typically this type of role is reserved for the A-list (The Duchess of Cambridge and Dame Helen Mirren are both godmothers to cruise ships from other lines), but TUI is after members of the public – and you can now apply.

The cruise line is after two godparents for new ships TUI Isla and TUI Maya which are making their big debut in March.

As part of the role you'll be get to attend the exclusive launch event in Amsterdam in March, and getting to test two of the itineraries on offer, with TUI covering the costs of your trip.

Oh, and you get to bring a plus one for it all!

Other duties will include making recommendations for customers and focusing on the excursions on offer for passengers.

  • Inside glamorous yacht Emerald Azzurra which just opened for cruise holidays

Godparents for cruise ships are appointed to bring good luck and protection to the ships, and are often chosen for qualities that reflect the spirit of the ship. Then of course, you hold the title of Godparent for life.

So, what does this entail for TUI?

Well, the travel firm says that it's looking for someone who's curious and loves to travel, someone "comfortable and confident being the star of the TUI River Cruises launch event and happy and willing to be on camera", and an "appreciation of waterways" (although the latter is not essential).

  • Saga currently has up to £125pp off European river cruises but be quick

To apply, simply upload a cover letter explaining in under 400 words why you think you'd be perfect for the role.

You can submit your letter on the online application form, where you can also find more details and the full T&Cs. Make sure to send it all before Tuesday 25th February when the applications close.

Those who are shortlisted will be invited to do a short interview via Skype on Wednesday 26th February.

Chris Hackney, Managing Director of Cruise said: "TUI River Cruises has given us an opportunity to start new traditions and having our godparent’s role live beyond the launch event with them ‘river testing’ some of our itineraries and making ‘Godparent Recommendations’ will be invaluable.

"It’s also really exciting for us to be opening up the search far and wide. Traditionally a ship’s Godparent is a Godmother but this role is open to anybody over 18 – they just need an explorer’s mind-set.

"Exploration means something different to each and every one of us.

"It may mean discovering an unknown beach in an exotic location to some, whereas for others it’s as simple as finding new paths to walk in the woods, visiting new destinations on their doorstep or the thrill of taking a selfie at a world famous landmark.

"We’re not looking for extreme mountain trekkers or arctic explorers, but ordinary people who are curious, open minded and like to travel."
