Anthony Hopkins seems to be among the many people who were surprised he took home the Best Actor Oscar, after fellow nominee Chadwick Boseman was widely believed to have been a lock-in for the posthumous award.
For starters, the 83-year-old actor was asleep at his home in Wales when the award was handed out, per his agent. "Tony was in Wales, where he grew up, and he was asleep at 4 in the morning when I woke him up to tell him the news," his agent Jeremy Barber told People. "He was so happy and so grateful."
Hopkins echoed the sentiments in a belated video speech he shared to Instagram on Monday morning, telling followers, "At 83 years of age, I did not expect to get this award. I really didn't. I'm very grateful to the Academy, and thank you."
Hopkins then honored Boseman, adding, "And I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early. And again, thank you all very much. I really did not expect this. So I feel very privileged and honored. Thank you."
The actor, who won the award for his role in The Father, is taking home his second Oscar award, the first being a Best Actor award for his role as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
This was Hopkins's sixth Academy Award nomination. He has previously also been nominated for his roles in The Two Popes, Amistad, Nixon, and The Remains of the Day.
