What was Ariana Grande thinking here?!
The Sweetener singer clearly wasn’t thinking things through this weekend when she made an off-hand (and completely inappropriate) comment about JonBenét Ramsey, the infamous young beauty pageant star who was murdered in her Boulder, Colorado home back in 1996. Grande has since apologized for the comment on her official Twitter account.
The controversy started on Instagram, where a user posted a picture of JonBenét on the cover of Globe Magazine, along with the comment “no one has done more covers.” You can see that comment — and Grande’s response (below):
Uhhh… WTF????
The original comment about doing magazine covers is, itself, horribly offensive and completely inappropriate, but then Grande decided to up and go over the top by following it up with her own response, saying to the user (below):
“i cant WAIT for this to be your Halloween look”
Um… what?! Girl, WHY?! As the person who originally screenshotted the IG post and comments (above) so eloquently notes, it’s definitely not appropriate to make a murdered girl’s look your Halloween costume. Why even say that?!
Quickly — well, sort of quickly, considering the comment first got nearly 1,000 likes — Grande deleted the offending Halloween comment. She then tweeted her response about the screenshot, too, apologizing for her actions by writing (below):
“yeah no i deleted it very quickly and understand that it’s not at all funny. this was out of pocket and i sincerely apologize.”
Honestly, not a bad apology in the sense that at least she came clean about it quickly, and owned up to doing it immediately. But it’s still completely (and very obviously) inappropriate in the first place, which makes us wonder: how did Grande not realize, like, before ever writing the comment that it was the wrong thing to do? Did she think it was funny or something?!
For those not in the know on why this is so controversial, Ramsey was murdered in her family’s home on Christmas night, 1996, while her parents and older brother slept in their beds. Her family had enjoyed a Christmas party together hours earlier and JonBenét, just six years old at the time, was apparently roused from her bed, assaulted, and killed sometime in the early morning hours.
A bizarre ransom note was written and left in the house, and for a time, JonBenét’s body was nowhere to be found, even as police began to investigate overnight. Hours later, her parents and neighbors found her lifeless body in the family’s basement, kicking off a years-long (and highly complicated, for many reasons) police investigation that ended up going nowhere.
Her murder has never been solved. For years after the horrific night in question, her parents John Ramsey and Patsy Ramsey were seen by police and the public as prime suspects. The pair was never charged, though, and evidence now points to the prevailing theory the murder was likely committed by an unknown intruder. Patsy has since died, passing away in 2006 from ovarian cancer. From time to time in the years since, people have come forward claiming to be the murderer, but none have ever been linked to the Ramsey house, or the murder, in any way.
The point of it all: this was a SUPER dumb controversy for Ariana to involve herself in, and she (and all of us) ought to know better than to joke about being a murdered girl for Halloween. Or so you’d assume.
Crazy!!!
