Just before Pete Davidson's whirlwind romance with Ariana Grande, he had been dating actress and writer Cazzie David for two-and-a-half years — who has now chronicled their split in an essay from her upcoming book, No One Asked For This.
In her book, David (who is also the daughter of Larry David) wrote of their relationship, during which, according to the Los Angeles Times, Davidson got a tattoo of her cartoon likeness on his arm, a tattoo of her name on his ring finger and a tattoo of her favorite emoji on his neck. David, however, said she struggled to convince him that she really loved him, and was apprehensive about ending the relationship because "previously, self-harm and suicide threats had come about from trivial circumstances."
Davidson, for his part, has been open about his struggles with borderline personality disorder and depression.
David eventually initiated a split, only to call Davidson back days later and say she’d made a mistake, to which he responded that he was "the happiest he had ever been," breaking up with her two days later via text message.
A day after that, David learned he was in a relationship with Grande, leaving her devastated and "shook uncontrollably in [her dad's] arms for the entire flight" on the way to her sister's graduation. As she curled up in a hotel, she recalled, her dad consoled her exactly the way you'd expect Larry David to — with a joke.
"CAZZIE, COME ON!" he told her. "YOUR ANCESTORS SURVIVED THE HOLOCAUST!"
"It was a really pivotal moment in my life," David told LA Times. "And writing about it has caused me a ton of anxiety, especially because I talk so much about hating the attention it brought me. Why would I bring more attention to myself by writing about it? But there’s nothing that’s gonna be worse than what I already experienced with that."
Still, it seems like there are no hard feelings. David told the Times she and Davidson are friends again, and she's already shown him the essay. Davidson is also thanked in the acknowledgements of her book, per the Times: "Pete. I love you … Your bravery inspires me and your friendship means the world to me."
