Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, turned to a beloved American fashion designer to honor Remembrance Sunday Stateside with Prince Harry.
Remembrance Sunday, which always falls on the second Sunday in November, marks the day that the United Kingdom recognizes the sacrifices of their veterans. So yesterday, Meghan and Harry visited the Los Angeles National Cemetery to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect the freedom of others.
For the couple’s personal recognition of the holiday, the duchess covered up in a structured, maxi-length, belted wool coat courtesy of Brandon Maxwell. She paired the piece with strappy, pointed-toe black pumps by London designer Jennifer Chamandi and a red poppy flower pinned to her coat’s lapel (the red poppy is the U.K.’s national symbol for remembrance). Meghan kept her accessories pared down for the private appearance, opting only for her Cartier Tank Française watch, her Cartier Love bracelet, and a sleek leather clutch purse.
The duchess’s attire echoed her sartorial selections from past Remembrance Sundays she and Harry honored alongside the royal family. In 2019, Meghan wore a similar black belted coat and matching wide-brimmed wool hat at the Cenotaph in London. And in 2018, she wore another structured wool coat, but that year, she had her hair pulled back into a sleek bun and pinned under a velvet fascinator.
“It was important to the duke and duchess to be able to personally recognize Remembrance in their own way, to pay tribute to those who have served and to those who gave their lives,” a source close to the Sussexes tells BAZAAR.com.
Along with paying their respects as a couple, Harry left a personal message on a commemorative wreath at the cemetery that read, “To all of those who have served, and are serving. Thank you.”
