The Australian breakfast show reporter had flown to the other side of the world to speak to Adele in person for Channel 7’s Weekend Sunrise, but had omitted to open “the most important email” of his life beforehand – the one containing a link to her album. Matt Doran was publicly humiliated and faced allegations that the indignant singer had walked out, abandoning the interview altogether when she discovered his lack of knowledge.

Adele didn’t walk out – it ran overtime

After facing “a torrent of abuse and mockery” and requests to clarify the situation from as far afield as Dubai and Japan, he has now finally spoken out to tell all about how he botched the chat that should have been “the highlight” of his career.

“This is a story that has sparked… a torrent of abuse and mockery from around the world,” he said. “And if I’m being honest with you, the bulk of this savaging I deserve and I totally own.

“I flew to London to interview Adele, an unspeakable privilege…

“I made the terrible mistake of assuming we weren’t to be given a preview a copy of this album, because our interview was airing before it was released and Adele’s album was the industry’s most-prized secret.”

A day after he touched down on British soil, he received an email from Sony, which did not reportedly mention Adele, but did contain a vital link to her album.

“The genuine, dead-set, hand on heart truth is that I missed it,” the crushed reporter confessed.

“By an absurdly long margin, the most important email I’ve ever missed in my life.

“Adele didn’t walk out,” he insisted, addressing allegations to the contrary. “It ran overtime.”

He revealed that he had spoken about a range of topics with the star, from how she birthed the song ‘Go Easy On Me’ while singing acapella in the shower to how creating new album 30 had helped her mend feelings about her troubled relationship with her now deceased father.

“We also discussed at length the concept of pure artistry, the majesty of Adele’s voice, what it must be like to hear that sound come out of ones own mouth,” he elaborated.

“We spoke of the paradox that is being the world’s most famous artist, but hating fame.

“Throughout the 29 minutes, Adele was profound, she was very funny, she was raw and then she was honest. Honest enough to describe her depression as ‘end-of-the-world’ stuff,” Doran continued.

However, he added: “All that doesn’t matter, because by missing the album link, however I might try to justify it, I’ve insulted Adele.

“To Adele, I say, I’d never have knowingly disrespected you by deliberately not listening to your work. I am so sorry.

“I also apologise to Adele’s Australian fans, and to you, our viewers, who through my error have been denied this interview and the insight into her character.

“Adele, track 10, ‘Hold On’ – in the bridge after the second chorus you write that: ‘Sometimes forgiveness is easiest in secret.’

“I’m not expecting that forgiveness, but I do owe you an apology.”

He also claimed that he’d spent five hours at his desk preparing for the interview and had arrived to it three hours early.

Yet by missing the link to the album – and confessing during their chat that he hadn’t listened to the eagerly-awaited 30 at all – he made what some might see as a fatal faux pas.

Matt Doran’s main message? “I apologise.”
