In a long interview with The New York Times, Baldwin was eager to clarify her side of the story.
She told the publication she’s “bilingual, and she speaks English with varying degrees of a Spanish accent depending on how happy or upset she is feeling.”
She also says she never knew anyone was labeling her a Spaniard, claiming she doesn’t read magazine pieces about herself.
And the time on live TV she asked for the word “cucumber?” Baldwin chalks that up to a “brain fart,” because she was really nervous.
The internet conversation persists, with Twitter users posting different videos of Baldwin and pointing to how her accent changes.
“The things I have shared about myself are very clear,” Baldwin told The New York Times. The yoga instructor and author shared her background, implying her story hasn’t changed:
I was born in Boston. I spent time in Boston and in Spain. My family now lives in Spain. I moved to New York when I was 19 years old and I have lived here ever since. For me, I feel like I have spent 10 years sharing that story over and over again. And now it seems like it’s not enough.
Baldwin reiterated her story in an Instagram post.
“I understand that my story is a little different, but it is mine, and I’m very proud of it,” she wrote in the caption to her video.

She also told The Times that she was honest with Alec Baldwin about where she was from (Boston) when they met and began dating.
However, as the publication pointed out, the recent Saturday Night Live guest actor once told David Letterman in an interview: “My wife is from Spain.”
Still, Hilaria Baldwin maintains she has spent a huge chunk of her life traveling in Spain, visiting cities like Madrid, Seville and Valencia.
Per The Times, she first went as a baby, and then every year afterwards, at least once. She refused to go into detail on timing, claiming that would be “maddening.”
But, she did acknowledge that sometimes, “there was school involved.”
“Sometimes it was vacation,” Baldwin cotninued. “It was such a mix, mishmash, is that the right word? Like a mix of different things.”

But her family also spoke in Spanish at home in Boston.
“When we weren’t in Spain, we called it ‘we brought Spain into our home,’” Baldwin explained.
Her children’s Spanish-influenced names, Baldwin said, are based on close friends. The language is also present in her own home.
“I send them to a bilingual school where they have Spanish in school and I speak to them in Spanish at home,” Baldwin shared about her children.
What about the relatively recent name change?
Baldwin told The New York Times she had a few nicknames over the years, but “as she got older, she wanted to choose one version of her name, and she chose Hilaria.”
However, she didn’t explain further than that — and turned the conversation to celebrity privacy.
“I am entitled to my privacy,” Baldwin told the paper. “People say, ‘No, you’re not entitled to your privacy because you married a famous person and you have Instagram.’ Well, that’s not really true.”
