Johnny Depp loses libel case against ex-wife Amber Heard after he denied ‘wife beater’ claims

Johnny Depp has lost his libel case against ex-wife Amber Heard and The Sun newspaper.

The 57 year old attended a 16 day trial in July where he battled against Amber, 34, and The Sun's publisher News Group Newspapers.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny sued the newspaper after a headline written by its executive editor Dan Wootton named him a "wife beater".

Mr Justice Nicol found that the newsaper's claims that he was violent towards his ex-wife was "justified".

Amber submitted 14 occasions during their four year long relationship, which broke down in 2016.


She claimed Johnny assaulted her and provided graphic details of the attacks, which were fuelled by drink and drugs.

Johnny denied all allegations and claimed that Amber was violent towards her instead.

Despite denying the allegations, Johnny admitted to taking large amounts of cocaine and drinking more than "normal" people could.

He also admitted to spending £23,000 ($30,000) per month on red wine and losing £502million ($650million) of his Pirates of the Caribbean earnings and owed £77million ($100million) in debts.

Johnny went on to accuse Amber of defecating in their shared bed and having an affair with Elon Musk, threatening to "cut his penis off".

Johnny and Amber met in 2009 on the set of The Rum Diary, where they played love interests Paul Kemp and Chenault.

They married in real life in 2015 before filing for divorce just 15 months later.

The Hollywood star has lost the first round of the trial, but next May will attempt to sue his ex-wife for £39million ($50million) after she wrote an article about being a domestic abuse survivor during their marriage.

Amber is counter-suing for an eye-watering £78million ($100million), claiming that Johnny and his legal team have mounted a "global smear campaign" against her.
