‘Julie & The Phantoms’ Producers Explain That Big Twist in the First 10 Minutes!

The Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms is now streaming and you might be surprised to find out there’s a big twist right at the beginning!

This post will obviously contain spoilers for the first episode, though everything we’re talking about happens within the first 10 minutes.

The show kicks off in 1995 when young rockers – played by Charlie Gillespie, Jeremy Shada, and Owen Joyner – are getting ready for their biggest show yet. Right before the concert, they decide to get hot dogs from a street vendor… and they end up dying from the food.

The series then quickly fast forwards to 2020 and follows a young girl named Julie (Madison Reyes) who is able to see the ghosts of the three boys. She soon discovers that when they perform together, other people can see them as well.

Co-showrunner Dan Cross opened up to TVLine about the decision to have the guys die from eating hot dogs.

“The reason we had the boys pass away from something as silly as hot dogs is that we just wanted to dive into comedy first,” he said. “We knew we would have an emotional journey to tell with [Julie], so we leaned into that.”

The show also deals with the death of Julie’s mom, so they chose to go a comedic route with the other death.

Co-showrunner David Hoge added, “No one knows the truth about ghosts, so we can really do whatever we want.”
