Kate Middleton, 40, will most certainly make an appearance at Sandringham today, albeit without Meghan Markle, 41, by her side. The Royal Family always convene at Sandringham each year for Christmas. However, the Duchess of Sussex has reportedly turned down an invite to attend the royal Christmas festivities along with her husband Prince Harry, 38.
The Princess of Wales stuns each year on Christmas Day, with her outfits making headlines each year. Daena Borrowman, the Marketing Manager at jewellerybox commented on her style evolution during the winter season over the last 11 years.
She said: “From her first Christmas as a royal in 2011 to the last time the royals could safely gather for their Sandringham festivities in 2019, the Princess of Wales’ Christmas day church service outfit has been a much anticipated annual festive highlight by fashion editors and royal fans alike. And Kate never disappoints. In fact, her glam game is meticulously revamped with each passing year.
“For her very first Sandringham service, the then-Duchess of Cambridge chose an enigmatic dark berry frock coat by an independent dressmaker with a colour coordinated show-stopping velvet hat by Jane Corbett and accessorised with black Mascaro platform pumps and understated Kiki McDonough green amethyst earrings.
“At her second Christmas in 2012, Kate, then pregnant with Prince George, spent Christmas with the Middletons in Berkshire where the Princess, ever the wardrobe repeater, paired her chestnut brown Hobbs ‘Celeste’ coat with her pair of suede Aquatalia heeled ankle boots.
“A red scarf and a red Gucci Monogram Canvas Horsebit bag added a splash of colour. In 2013, the Princess wowed in a festive green and blue Black Watch Tartan from McQ by Alexander McQueen paired with a forest green Gina Foster beret and calf-high Aquatalia Rhumba heeled boots.”
By the year 2014, Kate was pregnant with Princess Charlotte, now seven, but this did not stop the Princess from pulling out all the stops at Christmas.
Daena added: “In 2014, now pregnant with Princess Charlotte, the glowing Princess flaunted a gorgeous tweed Moloh ‘Turpin” double-breasted coat with eye-catching gold button detailing, a brown ‘Betty Boop’ hat by Lock & Co. Hatters, brown ‘Valerie’ platform heels from Emmy London and a rather distinctive silk scarf from Really Wild Clothing, in the print, ‘Autumnal Partridge’.
“In 2015, she was the picture of elegance in a forest green long belted coat from Sportmax, dark green Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. Hatters headpiece and black Mulberry Bayswater Clutch in black suede.
“The Princess repeated two elements previously featured in her Sandringham service outfits including her much loved Kiki McDonough green amethyst earrings and her trusty Aquatalia boots. She also re-wore a diamond and pearl studded acorn and leaf motif brooch, paying tribute to the Middletons’ familial coat of arms.”
Kate sometimes celebrates Christmas with her side of the family – which she did again in 2016. Daena opined: “Kate’s 2016 Christmas look was a monochrome dream and a lesson in wardrobe recycling.
“For Christmas with her parents in Berkshire, she repeated her chestnut brown Hobbs ‘Celeste’ coat with a jaw-dropping red fur scarf, proving that the addition of the right scarf can elevate a basic coat from drab to utterly sensational.
“A pair of burgundy Tod’s Fringed Leather Pumps, maroon velvet Mulberry clutch and pearl earrings on loan from the late Queen finished her look.”
The year 2017 marked Kate’s first Christmas with her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, the then-girlfriend of Prince Harry before they tied the knot.
Daena continued: “For Christmas in 2017, the Princess, pregnant with Prince Louis, opted for a festive red and green double-breasted tartan trench from Miu Miu, featuring brass buttons and a black velvet collar.
“She accessorised with a pair of black block-heeled Tod’s pumps, Lacorine ‘Sumac’ alpaca hat and Kiki McDonough Eden Citrine and Diamond Flower Drop earrings.
“In 2018, the then-Duchess dazzled in yet another monochromatic ensemble. In a red Catherine Walker coat dress with velvet detailing, a Jane Taylor ‘Halo Band’ headpiece with a beautiful black bow at the back of her head, maroon bow detail gloves, her maroon velvet Mulberry clutch on repeat and coordinated Gianvito Rossi pumps, she looked every bit the image of a future Queen. Her jewellery was minimal, as usual, with Asprey Oak Leaf earrings and her Middleton family crest brooch.
“Kate’s 2019 look is another Sandringham winner. At this point, she knew that the fit and flare silhouette is the most flattering cut on her and opted for a custom fur-trimmed Catherine Walker coat, rather reminiscent of luxurious old-world royal glamour.
“Contrasting forest green accessories including a Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co. Hatters, the ‘Josie Greenery” heels and a clutch from Emmy London and green amethyst and diamond earrings from Kiki McDonough.”
No pictures of Kate in Sandringham at Christmas emerged last year or in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Daena commented: “While no Sandringham service happened in 2020 or 2021, the Princess made an appearance outside Windsor Castle in 2020 in a regal green, double-breasted Catherine Walker coat with a matching faux fur collar from Troy London, Ralph Lauren boots, a sleek black Alexander McQueen clutch and Cornelia James wool gloves with bow details.”
