Mince pies are a festive tradition and are sold in the lead up to Christmas each year. With supermarkets competing to win the tastiest mince pie of 2020, judges for BBC Good Food magazine blind tested more than 150 foods across 20 categories from UK leading supermarkets. With 12 supermarkets entering the content for the best mince pie, what one did the judges think had the best sweet treat?

Christmas is fast approaching with supermarkets already starting to fill their shelves with festive goodies.

With so many different festive treats on offer, it can be hard for customers to know which supermarket to head to.

It was Spar’s luxury version of mince pies at £2 a pack which won the top price in the category.

This is the first time the small supermarket has won the award.

The judges said: “These have a lovely golden colour and crumbly, buttery pastry.

“The filling is sweet and jammy, with nice big chunks of plump, soaked fruit and a good hit of citrus from the candied peel.”

Morrisons The Best deep-filled mince pies which are also £2 were also loved by the judges.

Discount retailer Aldi was also close behind Spar with the judges highly commending their mince pies in the same category.

This year Aldi will be selling millionaire’s mince pies, flavoured crumble mince pies and mini mince pies all being launched on different days from September to November.

Flavours include Aldi’s Specially Selected Blood Orange & Gin Mince Pies and the Specially Selected Salted Caramel Crumble Mince Pies costing £1.79 for a pack of six.

High-end food store Marks and Spencer won a total of eight prizes in the categories of gravy, vegetarian main course, vegan main course, gluten-free mince pies, Christmas cake, stollen, Yule log and vegan pudding.

The judges said that M&S’ gravy was so tasty it “could pass as homemade”.

Upmarket Waitrose ran away with four wins, including the best pigs in blankets which we praised by the judges as being attractive and succulent.

The £4.25 pack is made with their No.1 free-range pork chipolatas.

BBC Good Food editor-in-chief Christine Hayes said: “Getting the most for your money will be more important than ever this Christmas so be sure to check our winners before planning your big shop.

“It’s good to see some great-value wins in this year’s taste test, all blind-tested by the expert BBC Good Food team.”
