Researchers found that people experienced the same fat-burning effect, no matter whether they were regularly caffeine addicts or never touched a drop.
The team, from Brazil’s University of Sao Paulo, believe guzzling a cup of Java before exercise can increase your alertness and make it easier for your muscles to burn body fat.
Dr. Bruno Gualano, study author and a professor of physiology and nutrition at the University of Sao Paulo, said: “No matter the habitual caffeine intake in the diet, acute caffeine supplementation can improve performance.”
While research shows coffee could help the body to burn calories, necking the caffeinated drink doesn’t necessarily work wonders.
Georgios Tzenichristos, a nutritionist who specialises in fat and cellulite reduction, says you won’t be able to achieve dramatic results by drinking one cuppa.
He said: “Caffeine is yet another hard-core compound, similar to ephedrine and capsaicin.
“You can’t have a lot of it to make a real difference in your weight, without developing side-effects.”
As research is in its infancy, further work must be carried out to determine the health benefits of coffee.
