Food recalls aren't that 'common' says expert in 2020

Food recalls are issued when there is a health and safety problem, such as an undeclared ingredient on an item’s label. Sainsbury’s is the latest supermarket to recall a product because it could cause a severe allergic reaction in some people if eaten.
Food company Unisnacks Europe Limited is recalling one of its products, which is sold in Sainsbury’s stores in the UK.
The item is the Lotte Pepero Snowy Almond. It is being reaclled because it contains peanuts and sesame which are not mentioned on the label.
This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts, or sesame.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) added that “this allergy alert has been updated to include an additional allergen, sesame”.

The FSA always details the latest food recalls on its website, explaining to customers why a product is being recalled, what they should do if they have bought it, and what action the company or supermarket is taking.
The Lotte Pepero Snowy Almond, which is a biscuit, comes in a pack 32g in size and has best before dates of May 1, 2023, and May 2, 2023.
The product is a biscuit stick covered in chocolate and crushed almonds.
It comes in two versions: a milk chocolate and a white chocolate, but only the white, “snowy” chocolate is affected.

The FSA said: “Unisnacks Europe Limited is recalling the above product from customers and will be contacting the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.
“The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.
“This notice explains to customers why the product is being recalled and tells them what to do if they have bought the product. Please see the attached notice.”
In its notice, Unisnacks Europe highlighted: “We are recalling Lotte Pepero Snowy Almond 32g due to peanut and sesame allergen not mentioned in the ingredient list.”
The company added: “If you have bought Pepero Snowy Almond as detailed above, and you have allergy, intolerance, sensitivity to peanuts and sesame, do not eat it.
“Instead: check if you have bought the affected use by date of the Pepero Snowy Almond 32g.
“You can do this by taking a picture of this notice or writing down the best before date for reference at home.
“Return the product(s) to the store for a full refund (with or without a receipt).”
The FSA’s advice to customers was as follows: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to peanuts, or sesame do not eat it.
“Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. For further information, please contact Unisnacks Europe Limited on 0800 195 6438 or [email protected].”
The organisation gave more details about food recalls in general, saying: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).
“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
