Savvy chef’s meatball sub ‘fakeaway’ costs under £5 to make at home

Britain is a nation of takeaway lovers, with the average person spending £641 a year on food-to-go.

But for those looking to save money and still enjoy their favourite fast food, one chef has found a way to recreate classic recipes, like Subway’s famous meatball sub, for a fraction of the price.

TV chef and TikTok sensation Dean Edwards claimed his fakeaway was “absolutely banging and cost-saving”, with no compromise on flavour.

The savvy cooking expert recommended swapping fresh ingredients for canned alternatives to slash the cost of his homemade meatball sub.

Not only is this recipe for a fast-food chain meal easy to follow, but it costs just £4.98 for all of the ingredients, as opposed to £9.99 from a popular sandwich restaurant.

Method

Take a non-stick saucepan and add the tomato puree before leaving it to cook for one minute on low heat.

Pour in the can of Napolina chopped tomatoes, followed by the onion granules, vinegar, oregano and sugar, then raise the heat to high.

Bring up to a simmer then add in the leftover meatballs and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, gently stirring regularly. Season with salt and pepper to taste before assembling the sub.

Halve the sub rolls with a sharp knife then spoon some of the tomato sauce onto the base of each.

Follow with three meatballs in each sub then scatter with cheese to cover the length of the sub roll.

Place the subs on top of the crisp plate within an air fryer or use a low-heat grill in the oven, and cook at 180C for seven minutes.

Once cooked add a little more of the tomato sauce and top with some torn fresh basil for extra flavour.
