Is Home and Away to be axed after 31 years on TV?

Home and Away could be facing the axe after more than 31 years on air, according to reports.

The Australian soap, which has a devoted audience here in the UK, has reportedly seen falling viewership numbers in its daily 7pm timeslot for Channel 7.

As a result, network bosses are considering the show’s future, with cancellation an option, according to TVBlackbox.

Other options to save the residents of Summer Bay and their dramatic lives include moving it to a later timeslot to allow more adult storylines and draw in a fresh audience.

Alternatively, they could opt for the show to drop weekly, in a five-episode binge-sized lump, on their 7PLUS streaming service.

It would then air nightly as planned on their sister channel 7TWO.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Channel 7 to provide further comment.

Despite the falling ratings, Home and Away has consistently been one of the highest rated shows on Australian TV.

It currently has a UK home on Channel 5.

The series, shot in Palm Beach, Australia, has also proven to be a launchpad for several household names, who started their careers on the series.

These include Guy Pearce (Memento, Iron Man 3), Naomi Watts (who’s leading the new Game Of Thrones prequel) and Julian McMahon (Charmed, Nip/Tuck).

Dannii Minogue also appeared on the show back in 1990 for year – which is a bit awkward considering sister Kylie made her name on rival Aussie soap, Neighbours.

However, the biggest Home and Away alumni is arguably Chris Hemsworth, who appeared as Kim Hyde for 171 episodes before becoming the God of Thunder himself, Thor, in the MCU.
