Peace lilies can easily die in winter unless placed in best location in home

How to care for a peace lily

Peace lilies are favoured in homes are not only are they beautiful, but incredibly low-maintenance as long as houseplant owners know where to place them.

In the wintertime, it is very common for people new to owning houseplants to accidentally kill off their peace lilies as they are much more likely to begin to dehydrate once the temperature has dropped

Since they are native to tropical temperatures, peace lilies are placed near a window which is building condensation due to cold air or has a draft, it is very easy for the plant to dry out

However, if watered too much then it can take longer for the soil in the houseplant to dry since they may not be getting enough sunlight in the winter, which means it can also be easy to unintentionally kill them through overwatering.

It is a tricky balance of keeping a peace lily watered, but not drowned or dehydrated. This can be very difficult, but one easy way to care for a peace lily in the cold is to place them in a different location in your home.

According to Happy House Plants, knowing where to place a peace lily is one of the “most important” aspects of caring for the flower, in order to make sure the plant is getting “sunlight and humidity.”

In a blog post online, the plant experts have recommended placing a peace lily in a bathroom or kitchen which is well-used, as the humidity building up from cooking or taking a shower will help keep the plant watered.

They wrote: “Peace Lilies enjoy a bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. This can be near east or west-facing windows but not too near these windows as draughts and radiator heat can damage the houseplant, causing it to wilt.”

“The best rooms we recommend placing your Peace Lily is in a bathroom/shower room or steamy kitchen.”

On Reddit’s gardening forum, experienced peace lilly owners have recommended placing the plant in a place where it will see the morning sun, as it does not do too well in extremely sunny conditions.

One user explained: “Peace lilies live well in indoor filtered light (they’ll fry in outdoor sun) but they still need that light! Find a spot that gets great morning sun (where do you like to have your breakfast?) or a sunny bathroom location or a window that gets some light in the afternoon.”

However, if you are worried about your peace lily beginning to droop this winter and unsure the correct way to water it, then there is a very easy solution outside to moving it around.

One commenter said: “Put a dish underneath your plant. Once a week, water your plant until just a little bit of water comes out of the bottom and starts to spread out into the dish.

“If no water comes out, you’ve got a clogged pot and –though it’s hard to overwater Peace Lilies — you’re drowning him. Pull him out of the pot, clear the drain and/or put some small rocks at the bottom of the pot, and put him back him.”
