‘Thrifty’ couple saves money building greenhouse out of free internal doors

A greenhouse is a safe haven for plants. It reduces the accessibility of insects and animals that have the potential to damage or destroy plants.

However, these garden houses can cost hundreds to purchase from stores and can even cost more building them from scratch.

While in the process of landscaping their garden, one couple took to social media to share a nifty way they have saved money building a greenhouse.

The pair decided to use internal doors to build their greenhouse – and the best part is that their doors were “free”.

Taking to the Loving Your Garden Facebook page, Alyssia Borriello wrote: “Me and my husband are making a greenhouse out of internal doors that somebody was giving away for free.

“We’re completely landscaping our garden at the minute (have flattened a huge slope) so we’re trying to be as thrifty as possible.”

Alyssia asked group members for advice on what she should use to make the roof that wouldn’t be “really expensive”.

She said: “We need to make a clear roof. We’ve priced up the clear perspex in B&Q today, but because we will need to cut six triangles out of it, there’s loads of wastage and it’s working out the be really expensive. What could we use for the roof?

“We’re really keen on making it look as fancy as possible and spending the least amount of money. We will be painting it when it’s finished.”

Although the greenhouse is still in the process of being made, group members were raving over the genius use of internal doors and how great the build was coming along already.

Deb Lilley said: “That is just awesome! Would love to see pictures when it’s complete.” Alison Pocklington wrote: “What a brilliant idea. It looks great already.”

Toni Bellitto commented: “Love the idea. I’ve only seen one other one in a landscape book that used all the old windows. I like your doors better and looks like they went together much easier. Good luck with the garden and give us after photo.”

Kathy Victory replied: “Great idea. I want to build one using sliding windows and doors Never thought of wooden doors it looks great.”

Garden enthusiasts also had some suggestions for where the couple could get “cheap” clear perspex to use for the roof.

Paul Green said: “Ebay for your clear sheet, loads of companies in there and dramatically cheaper prices than B&Q or similar.

Jean Cheyne wrote: “Try bus companies or whoever is in charge of your bus shelters. When they replace the perspex panels in the shelters they usually just toss them. Worth a try.”

Goose Murrin commented: “Look on selling sites. You can usually pick it up cheap, that way if there is any waste after cutting it’s not a problem.”
