Designer Morgan Brown Selling Off Complexes From Hollywood’s Golden Age For $5.85-$13 Million

Marketed as “The Golden Age Collection,” the bundle consists of four separate multifamily complexes, three of which boast strong Old Hollywood cred and are located in the Tinseltown vicinity, while the fourth is found in Venice, and, if we may be so bold, really has no business being corralled along with the other properties. But that’s okay, because each can be purchased individually instead of as part of a set!

According to Dirt, Arguably the most significant among the four offerings, and certainly the most Old Hollywood glam, is the complex known as Patio del Moro, which counts Charlie Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Humphrey Bogart and Joan Fontaine among its past occupants. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Fountain Avenue complex was designed in the mid-1920s by the gifted husband-and-wife team of Arthur and Nina Zwebell, who set the standard for deluxe courtyard housing in Los Angeles.

Commissioned by a client who had traveled extensively through Spain and North Africa and become smitten with the regional architecture, the Zwebell’s imaginative design for Patio del Moro included a horseshoe-arched entrance tunnel, a courtyard fountain and fireplace, and a copper-domed Tunisian tower. The 9,330-square-foot complex contains seven units that range in size from one to three bedrooms and feature arched windows and doorways, lofty beamed ceilings, built-ins, detailed wrought iron and tile work, French doors, and hardwood floors. Priced at $7.425 million, the historic property also comes with Mills Act tax benefits.

Also benefiting from Mills Act tax breaks is the Hollywood Hills compound Brown acquired for $12.5 million in 2020 and is now asking $13 million for, Las Orchideas. Designed in 1929 by Wilfred Buckland, an art director who worked with Cecil B. DeMille, the Spanish Revival-style compound was modeled after an Andalusian village in coastal Spain.

Occupying a pie-wedge lot of .35 acres located a few blocks from such iconic Hollywood landmarks as Musso & Frank and the Magic Castle, the micro village distributes nine units in a variety of bedroom-and-bath configurations between its five coral-hued structures.

Along with period details that include carved plaster beam ceilings, hardwood floors, French doors, wrought iron railings, and horseshoe-arch fireplaces, the units sport modern updates such as SubZero refrigerators, Wolf ranges, Bosch appliances, custom built-in cabinets, central A/C and a stackable washer/dryer. Per the listing, each unit comes with a private terrace, garden patio or balcony, and at least one parking space.

Within shouting distance of Las Orchideas is a third property in Brown’s “Golden Era” portfolio, Hillcrest Terrace. Cloistered behind dense foliage on a 16,874-square-foot lot, it consists of six stand-alone Craftsman bungalows originally built in 1912. Each unit features hardwood floors, elaborate moldings, exposed beams, a fireplace, stainless-steel appliances, central A/C and heat, and an in-unit washer/dryer. Additional amenities of the property, which is listed with an asking price of $5.85 million, include gated entry, five garages, use of a community courtyard and sauna, and access to a private park across the street.

Rounding out the collection is a batch of bungalows located a hop, skip and jump from Venice Beach and priced at an even $6 million. Running the gamut from a one-bedroom, one-bath on up to a three-bedroom, two-bath, each of the six renovated bungalows feature hardwood floors, stainless-steel appliances, central A/C and heat, and an in-unit washer/dryer. Property amenities include gated entry, garage parking, and a communal garden and courtyard.
