Beyoncé and Blue Ivy have collaborated before
This may be Blue Ivy’s first NAACP Image Award. However, it’s not the first the tiny titan has recorded tracks with mom, Beyoncé. Blue’s appeared on numerous projects with Bey and Jay-Z, including “Glory,” “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” and “Blue.”
The song, “Brown Skin Girl,” appears on the 2019 soundtrack for The Lion King live-action remake, The Lion King: The Gift. It’s what earned Blue the collaboration award. She sings in the chorus.
The record also includes Wizkid and SAINT JHN. Blue also has a songwriting credit for the song, making her a double-threat.
Doting grandmother, Tina Knowles-Lawson took to social media to share the news. She noted Blue is the youngest person in history to win this particular award.
“Congratulations BLUE IVY on your NAACP award last night for singing [sic] and writing on ‘Brown Skin Girl’ from the Album The Gift,” she wrote. “The youngest artist to win a major award. Grandma is soo proud of you. 8 years old!!!! You are giving all the beautiful little brown girls a voice,” she wrote on the social media app. Congrats!!!”
Beyoncé took home a few more trophies
It’s exciting enough to celebrate her 8-year-old daughter’s history-making-win, but Beyoncé left with more than just the Collaboration trophy.
For her work in The Lion King and her Netflix documentary, Homecoming, Bey took home an additional five awards. The categories she won were: Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Variety Series or Special for her Homecoming, Outstanding Live Album for Homecoming: The Live Album, and Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album for The Lion King: The Gift.
Marsai Martin, the youngest person ever to executive-produce a major studio movie, won multiple awards
Marsai Martin, the young starlet of ABC’s Black-ish, was also a big winner of the night. Martin earned four trophies. Her categories were: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture for her role in the 2019 film Little.
15-year-old Martin also won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Youth for Black-ish. Her portion was part of the untelevised awards of the night.
“I feel honored, I feel accepted and I feel seen,” Martin said, according to Variety.
Martin, along with Genius Productions, became the youngest person to executive-produce a major feature-length film. Her first-look deal with Universal made big news. She was 14 at the time.
Blue Ivy Carter and Marsai Martin are moving mountains just as well, if not better than their adult counterparts. They’re proving age really is just number, but talent is ageless.
