Spectators are competing for a seat at the Virginia courtroom to witness the $100 million defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard firsthand —with some dropping thousands for the privilege. One courtroom crowder says she’s already used up her paid vacation just to be a fly on the wall in the room where the trial is taking place —and spent $30,000 in the process!
As per People Magazine, Ivan De Boer, a 59-year-old from Los Angeles, used up all her vacation days to be a part of the spectacle. Not just that, she admits to having spent about $30,000 on expenses.
“I took my whole year’s vacation so I could be here for Johnny. I’m the same age as Johnny. I’m single, so I do what I want to, basically,” she told the mag, who further asked about any regrets she might have about spending so much, she said “No regrets. I’d regret it more if I wasn’t here.”
Another fan, Sharon Smith, revealed to the mag that she flies back and forth between the Virginia courthouse and her home in Los Angeles just to gawk at the madness —and to top it off—she says to secure a wristband that allows her into the courthouse, she has to line up at 1:00 in the morning!

“I’ve been coming back and forth from L.A. so you’re looking at $600 to $700 each time, 10 hours of your life in the air. But yeah, hotel, food, drinks, about $10,000,” she says of the amount she’s spent thus far.
Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, in 2019. But like so many things during the pandemic, the trial was put on hold. Depp is suing Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she insinuated that the actor abused her, although the essay never mentions Depp by name.
The Aquaman actress countersued Depp in 2020 for $100 million, claiming that he defamed her when his former lawyer referred to her allegations of abuse as a hoax. The countersuit is likely headed to court later this year.
