Hilary Duff is getting an earful over her latest Instagram post.
After sharing a picture of her 8-month-old daughter Banks with newly pierced ears, the “Haunting of Sharon Tate” actress, 31, received plenty of negative feedback.
“I can’t believe someone who seemed so screwed on pierced her babies ears, causing unnecessary pain that isn’t for medical reasons done by a fully qualified medical professional is child abuse in my eyes, the risk are unreal and that throbbing pain in her ears no matter how happy and looked after your child is just isn’t justified in my eyes,” one person commented.
Another asked, “Was she able to ask you to have them pierced? Was she able to agree to have them pierced? Did she sit there with a smile on her face whilst a gun with a needle was place on her ear? Did she say politely after, thank you? Or did she sit and cry and scream looking to you for comfort and to make it all better?” A third put it more succinctly: “Just won an unfollow after seeing you pierced her ears, poor baby.”
Some Duff fans, however, came to the star’s defense: “Got my bubs ears pierced at 3 months old, she didn’t even wake from her sleep, not one single problem with them. She’s now older & has never had an issue,” one person shared. “She can always take them out if she hates them. You all crazing giving someone crap over what they do to ‘their’ child.” A second commenter shared similar thoughts: “Baby is fine and ear piercing is so far from abuse! But hey, let’s promote mom shaming and online bullying from all the keyboard warriors.”
Duff isn’t the first celeb to catch flak over piercing drama; Cardi B, Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian have all recently been criticized for the same thing. And it seems the trolls might actually have a point; the Post reported that doctors generally advise not to perform elective procedures, such as cosmetic ear piercing, until a child is old enough to care for themselves.
So far, the “Younger” star has yet to respond to any of her critics, and her rep didn’t immediately return Page Six Style’s request for comment.
