Lotto winner whose ticket was lost in mail finally cashes in

For two decades, an Australian widow has put her faith in her late husband’s lottery number. On Sunday, her devotion finally paid off.

The woman from Happy Valley, whose name has not been reported, told contest officials for The Lott that she had no idea about the amount she’d won — a $737,030 jackpot — when she returned to the shop where she purchased her winning ticket.

Understandably, the store couldn’t fork over the ‘pot when she arrived on November 30. That’s when the clerk told her the amount she’d won.

“I just went to the newsagent to buy the paper and scanned my ticket, and they said they couldn’t pay it,” she said.

“I’ve been playing these same numbers for donkey’s years. I reckon 20 odd years I’ve played them every week,” the winner said. “I’ve always thought one day they’d win the big one.”

She told The Lott that her good fortune is owed to her beloved partner, who played those numbers every year prior to his passing.

“My late husband chose those numbers all these years ago. I don’t know why he chose them, but we’ve been playing them ever since,” she said.

“Like everyone, we’ve had a bit of a s - - t year, and this will help everyone get back on their feet,” she said.

“[What] I really want to do is get myself some new fences for my house,” she added. “We’ve lived here for 46 years, and I’ve always wanted new fences, so I’m finally going to get those done!”
