The only “green” thing they want is slime.
Children’s entertainment giant Nickelodeon is getting slimed online by conservatives over a recent Earth Day special discussing how pollution disproportionately affects communities of color.
“Learn the meaning of environmental racism,” Nickelodeon tweeted Friday, along with a video of the segment, which currently boasts nearly 500,000 views.
In the clip, part of the “Nick News” series, host Jamie Yuccas discusses why certain areas face more health hazards than others.
The CBS News correspondent chalks up the disparity to “environmental racism, a form of systemic racism where minority and low-income communities are surrounded by health hazards because they live near sewage, mines, landfills, power stations, major roads.”
Examples range from the toxic air of the POC-populated South Bronx to a mining project in San Carlos, Arizona, that “would dishonor an Apache sacred site,” per the clip.
Needless to say, the PSA didn’t sit well with right-wing viewers, who accused the network of trying to indoctrinate children. Nickelodeon’s official account disabled replies, only to be inundated by a vicious retweet-storm.
“And with this my family will never watch Nickelodeon again,” fumed one detractor. “Keep your politics out of our kids shows.”
“I remember the good old days when Nickelodeon brought equality to the world by dumping green slime on anyone who professed their ignorance,” wrote another critic.
Townhall.com senior editor Matt Vespa lamented, “Remember the good ole’ days when the network just aired salute your shorts, hey dude, rugrats, the adventures of Pete and Pete, Rockos modern life… AND didn’t peddle this left-wing drivel. Sad – truly sad.”
Nickelodeon isn’t the first kids entertainment titan to be accused of forcing anti-racist politics onto children. Disney sparked an uproar in March after dropping several “racist” titles from the Kids Profile on Disney Plus.
