Putting Christmas tree and decorations up now makes you happier, experts say

It’s official – people who put up their Christmas decorations early tend to be happier.

While many of us wait for Halloween to finish before we start decking the halls, there’s no harm in getting the tinsel out even earlier.

Experts say that spreading festive cheer can make us feel nostalgic and happy.

Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown told Unilad: “In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood.

“Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement.

“So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!”

Psychotherapist Amy Morin agreed with this analysis.

She added: “Nostalgia helps link people to their personal past and it helps people understand their identity.

“For many, putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for them to reconnect with their childhoods.”

While the idea of putting up Christmas trees now may seem barmy, some are already considering it.

On Twitter, one festivity fan said: “I think now that it’s September I’m going to put my Christmas tree up.”

Another wrote: “It’s September and me and the roomie are already trying to find the best spot in the apartment for our Christmas tree.”

A third commented: “It’s September so you know what that means… time to put out the Christmas tree and lights.”

And a fourth added: “I don’t care if it’s September, I’m putting the Christmas tree up!”
