Queen Elizabeth has been the head of the British monarchy for 68 years, after ascending the throne following the death of her father, King George VI. Over the years, loyal fans and followers have seen that the Queen has quite a few peculiar traits and habits. For starters, she’s quite the collector of corgis, and she’s believed to have been the owner of at least 30 of the breed since she became Queen in 1952.
Queen Elizabeth also has another noticeable preference: she’s always seen wearing gloves in public. It turns out that the biggest reason why is pretty awesome: she just likes them.
According to Genevieve James, the woman who crafts gloves for some of the world’s most famous faces, Queen Elizabeth chooses to wear gloves because that’s her style. As she told Hello!, “Nobody apart from the queen wears gloves all the time. The queen wears gloves all the time because she likes to and she’s the queen. They are part of her integral style and she’s iconic.”
There's another reason Queen Elizabeth always wears gloves in public
Of course, the Queen also has another reason for wearing gloves in public: it’s cleaner! Genevieve James explained to Hello!, “Also, she wears gloves because she’s shaking a lot of hands. I think they protect her hands. Primarily, she wears gloves because it’s her style. I can guarantee whenever she’s out and about, she’s always got one pair in her handbag as well in case she loses them.”
The head of the royal family is known to be fairly practical as well, so it makes sense that she always travels out and about with a back-up pair of gloves. In a separate interview with James, Reader’s Digest reveals that the Queen makes a point of reusing pairs of gloves instead of buying brand new after she’s worn them once.
“I think the royal family wants to be seen as being economical, not wasting money on things like that. She’ll wear her gloves for 40 years and will pull some out from a long time ago.” Instead of buying a new pair every week, the Queen usually makes a big order of, say, three dozen pairs, then won’t go back the rest of the year.”
