Thousands of Brits could have to repay £150 council tax rebate after error

Thousands of Brits have been told they could have to repay the £150 council tax energy rebate after an error.

It is believed around 3,000 households in North Lincolnshire have received the money in their bank accounts.

However they are not eligible for the support as they are in council tax band E.

Households who are in council tax bands A-D are entitled to the cash.

The £150 council tax rebate is designed to help with the rising cost of energy bills as it was introduced in February this year.

Councils will be handing out the one-off payments from April onwards, although many are still waiting for it.

Brits will get it automatically if they have a direct debit set up for council tax payments.

Those in council tax band E are not eligible for this so may have to apply for the same amount of cash under a separate scheme.

North Lincolnshire council has apologised for the error and contacted those affected.

One resident who claims to have received a letter about the error said the £150 will be taken by direct debit from July 4.

The wrong payments were made in error last week on June 9.

A council spokesperson said: "Due to a processing error a number of households in Band E properties not eligible for the £150 energy rebate received it.

"We have contacted these people directly to explain the situation, detail how the money is to be recovered and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
