Inkeeping with social distancing rules this Halloween is going to make creating a spooky feeling a little bit harder.
If you’re obsessed with the spooky season, though, there is a way to frighten the life out of yourself and fit in a mini-break at the same time.
Law Castle, an Ayrshire property that’s been a hotspot for supernatural testing and ghost hunting over the years, is available to rent on the platform Snaptrip, offering the prospect of bumps in the night and witchy encounters.
Originally constructed in the fifteenth century as a wedding present for Princess Mary, eldest daughter of James II of Scotland, Ayrshire Castle is now available on the last-minute UK accommodation site, sleeping 14.
On the outside, Law Castle looks like a ‘normal’ – if very regal – building. Most of the inside, too, is homely and cosy.
But, alongside the flagstones and fireplaces it was originally built with, there lurks some much more macabre features; a ‘murder hole’ and secret prison being two of them.
The ‘murder hole’ was once used to pour hot oil over unwelcome visitors to the castle, and the pit prison can be found behind a flagstone trap door… but the question is, will you be able to find it?
During your stay you can even take a short trip in the footsteps of Tam O’Shanter in ‘Alloway’s auld haunted kirk’, the setting for Rabbie Burns’ famous poem.
Take part in the gathering of the witches and warlocks amongst the ghosts and spirits before returning to your castle.
Ghost Hunters Scotland have investigated paranormal activity during their stay at the property, with ghost hunter Sharon McKee saying to a local newspaper: ‘We were doing a seance in one of the bedrooms when something psychically attacked me and transfigured its energy onto me.’
If you think you’re brave enough, there’s still availability for Halloween, but spook seekers will need to be quick before it gets snapped up!
To book out the whole castle (which can sleep up to 14 people) for the Halloween weekend, it’ll set you back £2,193 for the 2-night stay.
