BBC Breakfast presenter and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Dan Walker, 44, has taken to Twitter to bid a fond farewell to his co-star Katherine Downes, 39. It comes after Katherine, who has worked at the BBC for 14 years, announced “it’s time to move on” from the company.

The sports broadcaster penned: “So proud to have broadcast from this sofa (and other BBC sofas…) for the last decade.

“But after 14 years at the BBC, it’s time to move on.

“I’m leaving the Sports News studio later this month to concentrate on commentary and presentation…

“From radio to TV, news to sport, the BBC has taken me on the biggest adventure and I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been.”

She continued: “It’s given me the best of times and the best of friends.

“I hope they’ll have me back every now and then, but if you’re looking for a commentator/presenter/reporter, I’ll be free from the end of November…”

Katherine went on to admit the decision to leave wasn’t an easy one for her to make.

She concluded: “Not an easy tweet to write or an easy choice to make, but it feels like the time is right to try something new and I’m excited to see what else is out there.”

Dan shared Katherine’s news in view of his 728,000 followers to praise her for being “great” to work with.

He penned: “It has always been great to work with you Kat & I’m sure we will again.

“Enjoy life outside the big beast… you’ll be brilliant.”

Dan’s BBC Breakfast co-star Naga Munchetty also took to Twitter to react to the announcement.

Responding to Katherine’s hopes to return to the BBC “every now and then”, Naga wrote back in view of her 262,000 followers: “Always welcome my friend xx.”

Dan’s sweet message to Katherine comes after he updated his 237,000 Instagram followers on his preparations ahead of his Couple’s Choice performance with Nadiya Bychkova on Strictly tonight.

Speaking in a video, Dan said: “Hello, busy weekend ahead, hope you’re okay!

“Week seven by the way of Strictly Come Dancing, and look at this – amazed, surprised, and very thankful to still be part of the programme.

“We’re actually dancing a Couple’s Choice tonight to Classic by MKTO, do you know that one?”

Dan suddenly broke out into song, getting into the chorus of the pop hit.

He then continued: “We’ve had a lovely week, very enjoyable, and I know I’m still the favourite to go home and I think I saw that we got two of three prediction paddles on It Takes Two last night but it’s okay, I’m having a lovely time.

“I’m really enjoying learning to dance, I’m not a dancer, but Nadiya has shown me that I can actually dance which is amazing for me.

“And I get to dance with her every week and she’s one of the best dancers on the planet, it’s like having a kick about with Pelé.

“So it’s brilliant, I hope you enjoy tonight.”

Teasing his outfit for tonight’s episode, Dan laughed: “I actually undo my first button of the series, so lots to look forward to!

“I think I’ll watch some football in the build up and will see you tonight.

“If you’d like to vote for us that would be amazing! Have a great weekend.”
