‘When I divorced, my bungling lawyer told my husband the truth about our kids’

A woman who cheated on her husband throughout their marriage has revealed a slip of the tongue by her lawyer let him know the kids he had raised as his own – weren’t actually his.

Kiara, who is from a small town in north west Indiana, told the Soft White Underbelly podcast that her former husband is “not a nice man.” They were married for just short of ten years, and in that time they had two children.

“We both had our own sets of problems,” she says. “He wasn't very kind. He did lay hands on me. He would be very rude to me and make terrible comments, call me names, put me down…"

“But then,” Kiara admits, “I was unfaithful a few times, and ended up mothering children from those men on my husband.”

Kiara’s ex was oblivious to that, she says, until the marriage came to an end. “He raised them as his own, and knew them to be his own, until the divorce,” she says. But then something that Kiara’s lawyer said made him doubt that.

After that information emerged, her husband’s lawyer suggested that a DNA test might be a good idea. “The paternity test came back,” Kiara says, “and he was 99% not the father. He called me and said ‘do you want to get in front of this?’

“I said get in front of what? What do you mean? and about an hour later he had posted publicly on Facebook that he was not the father of the children.”

Despite that, he continued to act as the kids’ father, seeing them every other weekend after the divorce. But Kiara suspects his motives for that: “I call it control … nice is not a word that people often use for this man. Anything he can do to…continue to control my life is what I think to be the reason he sees them once a week and takes them every other weekend.”

Kiara is now in a relationship with the father of her oldest child, a former work colleague of her ex’s. She says she’s suffered a lot of criticism over the affairs, but that it’s her own guilt that’s hardest to handle:

“I’ve been called a lot of names and I get it,” she says, “but I've called myself those names more than anybody else."
